Decades ago Cornell buried chemical lab waste and low-level radiation research materials at two isolated sites north of the Tompkins County airport. That was how such material was handled in accordance with regulations at the time. The university has worked with state and outside experts to take remedial action. For more information, visit the disposal sites cleanup section of our website at www.eco.cornell.edu/DSC.

The health and safety of the indoor environment is the responsibility of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). ECOS and EH&S work closely as a team on a range of air, water, and waste issues.

ECOS and CMS
ECOS is collaborating on the development and implementation of the Cornell Management System (CMS) for the Safety, Health and the Environment. Former President Rawlings committed to EPA that Cornell would develop a management system to facilitate integration of safety, health & environmental issues into the day-to-day decisions and practices of the university; thereby improving it’s overall performance.

   Spotlight and News

DASNY Training Steve Beyers, and his team held training April 22nd and 23rd in Albany, NY for Dormitory Authority State of New York employees.  The training included a broad overview of the energy initiatives underway at Cornell and beyond, and include workshops on LEED for new buildings and utilizing State resources to encourage a reduced carbon footprint on a State-wide basis. The presence of Daniel Roth, our in-house Environmental Educator, is really helping us to prepare what we expect to be a great training workshop. Following this event, ECOS is hoping to use the tools and information prepared for this workshop to provide extended training to other interested parties.
