"A university culture of environmental excellence respecting Cornell's exceptional human and natural environment."
-ECOS Vision
Cornell University's Environmental Compliance & Sustainability Office (ECOS) ensures compliance with regulations that protect the air, water, and other natural resources throughout the university, and leads the campus operations Sustainability Initiative. ECOS works to:
- Improve Cornell's performance in meeting or exceeding regulatory standards;
- Reduce the university's environmental footprint and enhance our local communities;
- Maximize operating efficiencies while meeting requirements and furthering the university's voluntary environmental initiatives;
- Enhance Cornell's environmental leadership and reputation.
Inside ECOS
Cornell Sustainable Campus
ECOS is part of the effort to develop strategies for sustainability at Cornell. The Cornell Sustainable Campus website (www.sustainablecampus.cornell.edu) is maintained by ECOS, but showcases some of the environmental sustainability efforts being managed by other units at Cornell.
Disposal Sites Cleanup
Decades ago Cornell buried chemical lab waste and low-level radiation research materials at two isolated sites north of the Tompkins County airport. That was how such material was handled in accordance with regulations at the time. The university has worked with state and outside experts to take remedial action. For more information, visit the disposal sites cleanup section of our website at www.eco.cornell.edu/DSC.
ECOS Partners
ECOS and EH&S
The health and safety and hazardous materials is the responsibility of Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). ECOS and EH&S work closely as a team on a range of air, water, and waste issues.
ECOS and CMS
ECOS is collaborating on the development and implementation of the Cornell Management System (CMS) for the Safety, Health and the Environment. Former President Rawlings committed to EPA that Cornell would develop a management system to facilitate integration of safety, health & environmental issues into the day-to-day decisions and practices of the university; thereby improving it’s overall performance.
