The Environmental Compliance & Sustainability (ECOS) assists the Office of Sponsored Programs in obtaining research grants through such programs as those provided by the United States Department of Defense. ECOS is required to verify that the research conducted under grant funding be compliant with all applicable national, state and local environmental laws and regulations. The director of Cornell University's Environmental Compliance & Sustainability Office completes the Environmental Certification.
Procedure for obtaining a signed Certificate of Environmental Compliance (CEC):
- Access the required Research Environmental Questionnaire.
- The Principal Investigator completes the Research Questionnaire (in detail); and returns it via e-mail or hard copy to ECOS (cu_eco_grantcerts@cornell.edu or Suite 230, 395 Pine Tree Road, Ithaca, NY).
- The Principal Investigator submits a copy of the Research Project Proposal (if possible) to provide additional details to ECOS.
- ECOS writes a summary of the environmental aspects and procedures to be followed to meet environmental compliance requirements for the research project. The PI is contacted if any issues or questions arise during the completion of the summary.
- ECOS then sends the summary via e-mail to the PI who confirms or corrects interpretation of the summarized procedures. The PI is requested to attest to compliance with the summary’s environmental procedures.
- The ECOS Director signs the CEC and certifies compliance.
- ECOS then contacts the PI to arrange for delivery or pickup of CEC.
Important
Please provide ECOS with a realistic lead time for processing the CEC. This process can take a significant amount of time to complete (a week or several)and is dependent upon the availability of other Cornell University resource personnel (Biosafety Officer, Radiation Officer) and also upon the amount of detailed information provided by the PI.
